Most people know Chicago’s drill scene exploded with Chief Keef’s breakthrough mixtape Back from the Dead. However, the foundation of drill was actually laid by Bump J, who even had YZY (Kanye West) as a producer for his hit Move Around.

Fast forward to 2013, and you had the breakout projects of G Herbo and Lil Bibby—the latter, interestingly enough, went on to become a real estate mogul. This era paved the way for modern Chicago drill, which leans more 808s & Heartbreak than Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

Still, the themes remain the same: in Chicago, survival is a daily battle, and making it past 30 is a rarity.
